Michael E. Carter, CPA
Mike Carter is Partner In Charge of the Lakeland office. Mike has 26 years of experience in both public and private accounting, including 21 years of nonprofit and governmental auditing experience. Mike serves a broad range of clients with accounting and attestation services including governments, nonprofit organizations, businesses in a variety of industries, and individuals.
Education and Activities
Mike received his BS in accounting from the University of Florida in 1981 and has been a Florida Certified Public Accountant since 1983. Mike joined NCT in 1991. He has received the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' Governmental Accounting and Auditing Certificate of Educational Achievement.
Mike is a member of the American and Florida Institutes of Certified Public Accountants (past president of the Ridge Area Chapter 2000-01) and the Government Finance Officers Association and the Institute of Management Accountants (past president Polk County Chapter 1995-96). Mike serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of South Florida Polytechnic Campus, the Board of Directors for the United Way of Central Florida and the Learning Resource Center and as Treasurer for Heartland Crime Stoppers and the Kiwanis Club of Lakeland. Mike has also served on the Personnel and Finance Committees of the First Baptist Church of Sebring, on the Sebring Community Redevelopment Agency Board, as Treasurer for the Florida Hospital Foundation Board, and as Chairman for the Sebring Chamber of Commerce.
In addition, Mike is also a graduate of Leadership Lakeland, Leadership Highlands, and Leadership Polk.
Relevant Experience
Mike has been partner or manager for most of the firm's nonprofit and governmental audit engagements listed in this proposal. Mike has a unique insight into the audit process which is not possessed by many professionals experienced only in public accounting. He has also been on the other side of the audit fence for 5 years as assistant controller for Scotty's, Inc. and controller for a software development company. Mike worked almost 3 years with a "big eight" accounting firm with a heavy concentration of auditing nonprofit organizations and local governments.
